The tradition
Many years after he started his search for the perfect formula, François-Xavier de Beukelaer completed his final recipe for Elixir d’Anvers in the early hours of 19th March 1863. A student of medicine and pharmacy, he created this delicious herb-flavoured liqueur that stood out because of its remarkable digestive and beneficial characteristics. The exceptional quality of Elixir d’Anvers was soon recognized worldwide, and it was awarded dozens of gold medals and honorary diplomas. Elixir d’Anvers’ popularity wasn’t just confined to Europe, and soon this artisan herb-flavoured liqueur was also praised in Australia, Africa and the United States. One of the most remarkable diplomas was awarded in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France (1887), and was signed by Louis Pasteur.
Elixir d'Anvers is part of the collective memory of any Belgian. For many generations, Elixir d'Anvers has been enjoyed in the conviviality of the family circle, and in the past children were even treated to a sugar cube with some drops of Elixir d'Anvers


Production process
Since 1863, this liqueur has been prepared in the same artisanal way, and with the original recipe containing dozens of plants and herbs from all over the world, that give Elixir d'Anvers its unique flavour. The production process of Elixir d'Anvers takes approximately 5 months and consists of the following phases:
Maceration
The plants and herbs are mixed with pure alcohol and soaked for a long time in a copper pot still where they release their flavours
Distillation
During the slow distillation, the copper pot still is heated with steam and the alcohol evaporates, carrying with it all volatile aromas from the ingredients. These fumes condense back into an alcohol distillate or alcolate: which contains all the aromatic characteristics of the ingredients
Preparation in the autoclave
The alcolate is mixed with pure alcohol soft water, and sugar
Oak barrel maturation
The resulting liqueur is aged in old oak casks, which add the typically rounded flavour to Elixir dAnvers
